Warm weather and warm spirits were definitely in plentiful supply at this year's Fourth Annual Stepping Towards the Cure 5K at Oakland's Lake Merritt on Sunday, September 15, 2013.

Participants were treated to an amazing zen-like warm up session with John Ellis from Ananda Martial Arts & Fitness Academy followed by a lively cardio session led by Zumba dance & fitness instructor Martha.

Of course Stepping Towards the Cure would not be complete without the lively sounds of New Orleans Style Brass Band MJ's Brass Boppers who were back to inspire the participants along their 3-mile trek. Adding to the fun was the weirdly wonderful Pink Man along with the cutest group of karate masters-in training from Ananda Martial Arts who treated us to a post-Walk performance.

Two weeks later on Saturday, October 5th, the festivities continued in Southern California at scenic Alondra Park in Lawndale.

Kicking off the program, participants were treated to the sounds of gorgeous singer/songwriter/producer/musician, Sheléa Frazier, whose tribute Something Beautiful, reminded us all how we can take our darkest days and turn them around into something inspiring. Attendees were also blessed with words of encouragement from the lovely actor, Tangi Miller, and the event’s main supporter, the Honorable Mark Ridley-Thomas, LA County Board of Supervisors Chairman who reminded everyone of why they were there:

"We want people to be armed with information about this disease, but we also want them to have a resource where they can find not just comfort and support, but the assistance they need to stay in their homes and on their feet while they fight this fight."

Warm-up honors then went to the dynamic Sabrina Green Thomas, who was back with her trademark never ending supply of energy that continues to leave us simultaneously breathless and inspired. DJ Cory of DJ Party Pros set the musical vibe with an amazing mix of old and new school hits while attendees treated themselves to goodies from Jamba Juice, Noah's Bagels, and Veggie Grill, massages from the Southern California Health Institute (SOCHi) and information and giveaways from Walgreens and various health advocacy organizations.

We want to thank our amazing PR Team - Purry Communications (PCG), our wonderful group of volunteers, and our sponsors. Thank you for time, generosity, and continued efforts made in support of this cause.
