What started as a friendly rivalry game between schools from neighboring communities has become an event as the East Union Lancers and the Ripon High Indians girls' basketball teams squared off to fight breast cancer in the inaugural Hoops for the Cure Classic on Saturday, December 18, 2010. The annual contest, in which East Union and Ripon players will wear pink and white reversible jerseys, will now serve as a tool to help breast cancer patients and their families. This year, we were thrilled to learn that a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Triple Step Toward the Cure.

East Union head coach Jim Agostini aims to spread the generosity shown to his family after his wife, Leslie, was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer on Oct. 30, 2009. Leslie is now cancer-free, but the Agostinis weren't ready to completely leave the experience behind and came up with the idea. Coach Agostini then enlisted the help of good friend and Ripon's varsity head coach, George Contente, along with volunteer committee members from both sides including: Joe Pellegrino, Jim McGuiness, Rich Posz, Susan Swift, Belinda Kachalkin, Pam Wright, Malissa Puahi, Tammy Feddersen and Cary Posz to bring the idea to life.

The result of their hard work was an AMAZING event. In addition to an exciting game in which the Lancers hooped their way to victory, attendees enjoyed face painting, delicious treats from the snack-bar, and took home prizes from several raffles and a silent auction. Trinkets such a pink basketballs and bracelets were also available for sale.

A huge THANK YOU to the Agostinis, the Committee, the wonderful young women of both East Union and Ripon high schools who played their hearts out for a worthy cause, and to everyone who came out to make the evening a smashing success !
